Kitchen cabinet refacing simply means that the cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hardware and/or exterior framework is new or updated, while the existing structure of the cabinets remains. As a result, kitchen cabinet refacing typically costs half of what it costs to rebuild kitchen cabinets, but still provides the
“feel” of a remodeled kitchen.

Typically, when refacing kitchen cabinets, the cabinet doors and drawer fronts are replaced and a matching wood, paint or veneer is applied to the framework of the cabinets. But if you simply want to add a kitchen cabinet door to your existing cabinet system, Discount Cabinet is an expert at matching new stains with the old stains.

Replacing Cabinet Doors and Drawer Fronts

Since the cabinet doors and drawer fronts are the most prominent part of your cabinets, it is important that the cabinet door/drawer you choose reflects the style of kitchen that you want. Discount Cabinet offers a variety of styles and materials for you to choose—from the simplicity of Traditional to the intricacy of Victorian and every style in between.

Replacing Cabinet Hardware

While choosing the right style of your cabinets is important, choosing the wrong hardware can ruin the “look” that you might be going for. Frameless cabinets have no face frame, and the hinges attach to the door or the side or end panels. Framed cabinets have a frame around the front edges, and the hinges attach to the door and the frame.

In addition, there are 2 different types of hinges—traditional and European. Traditional (exposed) hinges include barrel hinges, which are self-closing spring-loaded, fully exposed and rest on the front frame of a framed cabinet, and knife hinges, which are partially embedded either fully or almost fully visible on the face of the cabinet frame. Both types of hinges provide a full 180-degree door opening.

European (concealed) hinges are screwed into recesses on the backs of the cabinet door and the side panel or face frame of the cabinet and are not visible when the door is closed. Most concealed hinges are self-closing, easily adjusted and limit the door opening to 110 degrees.

The type of cabinet you want will typically determine the type of hinge used. A framed cabinet with partially overlaying doors and exposed frame could have traditional or European hinges. Full overlay doors on frameless cabinets will always have European hinges.
